View from the cab
What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.
This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.
Downloads about 4.0 MB of terrain data the first time.
Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story
Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
The Puzzle Hills lookout was an L-4 cab from 1932, set on the east point about two miles northeast of Square Mountain.1 The Forest Lookouts list places the site in the Flathead National Forest, at 29N-13W-34.2
The firelookout.com page says the cab was destroyed in 1960.1 The Forest Fire Lookout Association index lists the site as a ground lookout that is gone.3
A Wild Montana group hike in September 2025 was planned as a northward route through the Puzzle Hills that would pass an old lookout site. It was to start at Morrison Creek.4 The listing describes the area as part of a 12,400-acre Slippery Bill–Puzzle Hills recommended wilderness addition to the Great Bear Wilderness.4 It does not say whether the old lookout the group passed is the same site as the 1932 cab.
No source we read describes what, if anything, remains at the site today.
