View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 3.7 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Reid Divide was a lookout in the Flathead National Forest, about 12 miles southwest of Whitefish in Flathead County, Montana, at an elevation of 5,928 feet.1

Firelookout.com dates the tower to 1938 and calls it an L-4 design.1 One Forest Lookouts page describes a crow's nest in a tree, with a tent camp and an L-4 lookout house.2 A second Forest Lookouts page for the same lookout describes a tower of round, native timber with an R-1 cab, so the sources disagree on the cab.3

Firelookout.com says the lookout was abandoned in 1954.1 Forest Lookouts marks it as removed.2

Firelookout.com also says a crow's nest two miles east of the lookout is still there.1 No source describes the tower site itself today, and none says whether the public can reach the ridge.
