View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 4.3 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

A 30-foot pole tower that the lookout's page calls an L-4 went up at Riverside in 1934.1 The site lies in the Flathead National Forest, about 12 miles southeast of Hungry Horse, in Flathead County.1

The page says rising water from Hungry Horse Reservoir covered the site, and it dates the loss to 1950.1 The Forest Fire Lookout Association's Montana list also marks the tower as gone.2

Those dates conflict with the dam's history. The Park Service dates the completion of Hungry Horse Dam to 1953, which falls after the 1950 date on the lookout page.3 The same history says the reservoir flooded one fire lookout tower, which the Bureau of Reclamation rebuilt at another site, but it does not say which tower that was.3

No source describes what, if anything, remains of the site today. If the lookout page is right, the site now lies under the reservoir.1 No source says whether the spot is open to the public.
