View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Roderick was a fire lookout on the Kootenai National Forest in Lincoln County, Montana, about 9 miles south of Yaak.1 Firelookout.com gives its elevation as 6,600 feet.1 Peakbagging.com, which calls the peak Roderick Mountain, gives the mountain's elevation as 6,635 feet.2

Firelookout.com lists a frame cabin on the site in 1921.1 In 1942 a 10-foot wood pole tower with an L-4 cab was built.1,2

The tower was destroyed in 1975, according to firelookout.com, and about 1975 according to peakbagging.com.1,2 The Forest Fire Lookout Association's Montana list marks the site as gone.3

Peakbagging.com places the lookout on a small hill about 700 feet southwest of the mountain's high point.2 That high point has a benchmark, placed in 1963.2 The page carries a photo dated August 10, 2020, but its text does not say what the photo shows.2 No source we read describes what stands at the lookout site today, or whether the public may visit it.
