View from the cab
What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.
This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Story
Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
A lookout on Sheep Mountain, an L-4 cab put up in 1929, stood about 7 miles west of Superior, Montana.1 The firelookout.com entry dates its abandonment to 1946 and its destruction to 1952, and gives its elevation as 6,723 feet.1 The page heading gives its dates as 1929 to 1952.1 The entry places it in the Lolo National Forest.1 The two sources disagree on the county. The firelookout.com entry says Mineral County, while the Forest Fire Lookout Association's Montana list puts the coordinates 47.18064, -115.05476 in Missoula County.1,2 The same list has other lookouts called Sheep Mountain, so the name alone does not settle which one is meant.2
