View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.2 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Skyline Mountain sits about 16 miles northwest of Libby, Montana, in the Kootenai National Forest and Lincoln County.1 The firelookout.com page gives its elevation as 6,250 feet.1 The Forest Fire Lookout Association's Montana list puts the site at 48.57841 north and 115.76650 west.2

The page dates a cabin at the site to the 1920s and lists an L-4 cab for 1935.1 It does not say whether the L-4 cab replaced the earlier cabin.1 The same list gives the site's type as ground and its status as gone.2

Neither source says when the lookout was removed.1,2

Today, no source we read describes what remains at the site, and none says whether the public may visit it.1 The sources we found describe the site in only a few lines.1
