View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.0 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Spar Peak lies in Lincoln County, Montana, about 18 miles south-southwest of Troy, in the Kootenai National Forest, at an elevation of 6,585 feet.1 The Forest Fire Lookout Association lists the site as a ground lookout that is now gone.2

The firelookout.com page records an L-4 cab here in 1930 and says it was destroyed in 1959.1

Hiking trail No. 324 now climbs to the summit in the Cabinet Mountains.3 The trail guide gives an eight-mile round trip with about 2,800 feet of climbing, rates it hard, and gives driving directions to the trailhead from MT-56.3

The trail guide reports traces of an old lookout tower on the summit.3 Firelookout.com describes an L-4 cab, and the Forest Fire Lookout Association lists the site as a ground lookout, so the sources do not clearly agree on what stood there.1,2,3 No source I found says how much of the structure survives.
