View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.1 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Spruce Mountain lies in Flathead County, Montana, about 27 miles southeast of Hungry Horse, in the Flathead National Forest, at an elevation of 6,180 feet.1 The Forest Fire Lookout Association lists it as a tower that is now gone.2

The firelookout.com page describes a 30-foot pole tower with an L-4 cab in 1931, set one mile east-southeast of the prominent summit, and records that the lookout was abandoned in 1965.1 The Sanders County Ledger says L-4 cabs could stand on the ground or on pole or timber towers as tall as 100 feet.3
