View from the cab
What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.
This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.
Downloads about 4.3 MB of terrain data the first time.
Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story
Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
Steamboat Mountain sits in the Lewis and Clark National Forest.1,2 FireLookout.com puts the lookout 17 miles southwest of Augusta, but a 1960 survey description places the summit 13 miles south and 12 miles east of town, so the two sources disagree on direction.1,2
Work on the site was under way by June 1930.2 A ranger named Harris had a crew building a trail around the mountain, so people could reach the new station planned for the top.2 A forest telephone line ran from the Elk Creek Ranger Station that summer, and by late August the trail and phone line reached the lookout camp on the summit.2
The cabin itself came later.2 The Independent Record reported on December 15, 1933 that a new lookout house had been built there.2 FireLookout.com dates its L-4 cabin to 1934 instead.1 A 1960 survey describes a white-painted wood building about 14 feet square and roughly 14 feet tall.2
FireLookout.com records the cabin as abandoned in 1973.1 The Forest Fire Lookout Association's Montana list and FireLookout.com both mark the site as gone.1,3
None of the three sources I read describes what, if anything, remains on the summit today, or whether the site is open to visitors.1,2,3
