View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.1 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Sugarloaf Mountain is a lookout site about 20 miles east of Libby, in Lincoln County, at an elevation of 5,432 feet.1 The page also names the Kootenai National Forest, with no role stated.1

The page dates the L-4 cab to 1930 and says the lookout was abandoned in 1942.1 Its page title identifies it as a cabin, and the Montana list gives its type as ground.1,2

The page marks the lookout gone but gives no date for that.1 The list agrees that the site is gone and places it at 48.36117, -115.11780.2

No source we read describes what, if anything, remains on the mountain today, and none says whether the public can visit the site.
