View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 3.7 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Taft Summit lies seven miles east-northeast of Lookout Pass, in Sanders County, Montana, at an elevation of 6,280 feet.1 The site is on the Lolo National Forest.1,2

The first tower there was a 35-foot pole platform, built in 1909.1 The 1910 fire, which firelookout.com calls the Great Idaho Fire, burned about three million acres across northern Idaho and western Montana.1,3 Two of the tower's legs burned in that fire, and the tower fell into the Montana Power Company lines beside it.1

An L-4 tower went up there in the 1930s and was destroyed during the 1950s.1

The Forest Lookouts Montana page marks the site as removed and gives no date.2 The Forest Fire Lookout Association lists the tower as gone.4

Firelookout.com says a crow's nest about half a mile east is still there, though the page does not date that remark.1 I found no source describing the summit site today or whether the public can reach it.
