View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Two Trees Point is about 18 miles north-northeast of Thompson Falls, in Sanders County, Montana.1 Its lookout stood at about 6,040 feet.1 The Fire Lookout page places it in the Lolo National Forest.1 The Forest Lookouts page gives both names, Cabinet National Forest and then Lolo National Forest.2

The sources do not agree on when the cabin went up. The Fire Lookout page says a log cupola cabin was built on the east summit in 1933.1 The Forest Lookouts page gives 1928 for a log cabin with a cupola.2 A November 1933 item from the Sanders County Independent-Ledger, quoted on that same page, describes a spur off the new road that linked to the Two Trees Lookout, which suggests a lookout was already in place that year.2

The cabin was destroyed in 1962.1

The Forest Fire Lookout Association lists the site as a ground site, with the lookout gone.3 No source we read describes what, if anything, remains on the summit today, or whether the site is open to visitors.
