View from the cab
What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.
This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.
Downloads about 4.2 MB of terrain data the first time.
Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story
Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
Van Peak sits in Lake County, Montana, inside the Flathead National Forest.1,2 A Coast and Geodetic Survey description written in 1940 places the Forest Service lookout house on a high, bare peak, about seven and a half miles north-northeast of Condon Ranger Station.1 The Forest Lookouts page gives the location as township 22 North, range 16 West, section 6.1
Firelookout.com dates an L-4 cab on the peak to 1939.3 The Montana list files the site under "Ground" rather than as a tower, and gives its coordinates as 47.69152 north and 113.70085 west.2
The Montana list now marks Van Peak as gone.2
No source describes what, if anything, remains on the summit today, and none says whether the peak is open to the public.3,1,2
