View from the cab
What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.
This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.
Downloads about 4.2 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story
Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
Vermillion Peak sits in Sanders County, Montana, in the Kootenai National Forest.1,2 Firelookout.com says a pole L-4 tower went up on the peak in 1935 and was destroyed in 1963.3
The Forest Lookouts page quotes a September 1936 newspaper item about the work. The item says a crew was hauling gear to a new lookout site near the upper end of Graves Creek, with Ben Cox as foreman.1 That is a year later than the date firelookout.com gives, so the two sources disagree about when the tower was built.3,1
In June 1946, Forest Service packers reached the station and found it wrecked. A bear had climbed the tower and got inside the cabin on top of it.1
The Forest Lookouts page gives 1963 as the year it was destroyed, citing a source it names as Kresek.1 The Montana list marks the tower gone.2 No source describes what remains at the site today, and none says whether the peak is open to the public.3,1,2
