View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 4.4 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Warex lookout was a 70-foot pole tower, which its listing calls an L-4 tower.1 It stood in the Kootenai National Forest, about 18 miles south-southwest of Eureka, in Lincoln County, Montana.1,2 The site is at 6,242 feet.1

The listing puts the tower in 1934.1 Only one page we found gives this tower's history, so the dates rest on a single listing.

The same listing places its destruction in 1972 or 1975 and does not say which year.1 The Forest Fire Lookout Association lists it as a tower, places it at 48.65832, -115.27443, and marks it as gone.2

No source we read describes what, if anything, remains at the site today, or whether the public may visit it.
