Story

Researched 8 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The first building on Werner Peak was a log cabin, raised in 1911 about a mile east of the summit.1 Another log cabin went up on the summit in 1914, and a 10-foot pole tower with an L-4 cab was built by 1941.2,1 The present two-story concrete and frame tower replaced that pole tower in 1983.2,1 A 2010 newspaper gives 1984 for the finished 15-by-15-foot building, so the exact year is a little unsettled.3 The old L-4 cab went to a museum south of Kalispell in 1987.2

Stillwater State Forest staffs the lookout in an extreme fire season, and the state keeps August for fire watch.4,5 Known keepers include Allen Overton in 1952 and Wendy Boggess from 1975 to 1977.6 In mid-August 2001, a lightning-started fire burned 860 acres east of the peak, and firefighters contained it within two weeks.4

The National Historic Lookout Register dated its listing to January 9, 2021.2 In 2021 a volunteer crew from the Northwest Montana Lookout Association spent a weekend replacing decking and repainting the building.1 Under a yearly agreement with the state, the crew comes back to keep the lookout in shape, and a local report counts it among the northwest Montana lookouts still standing.1

The Montana DNRC administers the lookout, and it can be rented in summer.2 The Stillwater State Forest began renting it out as a pilot project in 2010, at $35 a night.3 The 2026 listing charges $60 a night plus bed tax, takes phone reservations only, and opens July and September for booking, with August kept for fire duty.5 Visitors reach it by vehicle along a narrow, bumpy road, bring their own water, and find the Ralph Thayer Memorial Trail next to the building.4,3,5
