Story

Researched 8 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

White Mountain Lookout stands in the Lolo National Forest, about 11 miles north-northwest of Lolo Pass.1,2 The first cab on the site was an L-4 built on a 40-foot wooden tower in 1934.1,2,3

A replacement followed: a 41-foot timber tower topped by an L-4 cab with a catwalk. The sources disagree on its year. The NHLR description gives 1953, while firelookout.com and PNWSOTA give 1954.1,2,4

No one has staffed it since the early 1970s, and it now holds communication equipment.2 Its register entry dates from September 24, 2011, when the NHLR said restoration was planned.1 Fundraising to refurbish the tower has begun, started by district staff and other interested people.2

In 2005 KLP Inc. handled both the design and installation of lightning protection for the tower.3

Sources also disagree on the county. NHLR says Mineral County, while firelookout.com says Missoula County.1,2

Today visitors walk about two miles through forest, partly along a road described as permanently closed.4

Where sources disagree

We show disagreements between sources instead of quietly picking one. If you know which is right, please tell us.

  • Sources disagree on the year it was built.

    • NHLR: 1954
    • firelookout.com -- Rex Kamstra's Forest Fire Lookout Page: 1934

Sources give different build years. Often one counts the first lookout on the site and another the structure there now.
