View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 3.8 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

White River Butte was a fire lookout in Powell County, Montana, on the Flathead National Forest.1,2 The Forest Lookouts page gives its location as 21N-13W-28, and the Forest Fire Lookout Association's Montana list places it at 47.55213 north, 113.28569 west.2,3

Firelookout.com dates the lookout to 1937, when it was a 10-foot pole tower of the L-4 type.1 The Sanders County Ledger describes that design as a 14-by-14-foot wood-frame cab with windows on every side, set either on the ground or raised on a pole or timber tower.4 The same firelookout.com record says the White River Butte tower was abandoned and is now gone.1 The Forest Fire Lookout Association's Montana list also marks it as a gone tower.3

No source we read describes what, if anything, remains at the site today, or whether the public can reach it.
