View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Windy Pass lookout stood in the Gallatin National Forest, about 29 miles south of Bozeman, Montana.1 The Forest Lookouts site dates a log cabin there to around 1914 and an L-4 cab to 1931.2 The Forest Fire Lookout Association lists the site as a ground-level lookout rather than a tower.3

The firelookout.com record says the lookout was abandoned and is gone, but it gives no dates for either.1 The Forest Fire Lookout Association's list also marks it as gone.3

Today the Forest Service rents a cabin called Windy Pass Cabin, on the Windy Pass Trail.4,5 The agency says it was built in 1934 and calls it historic.4,5 It is open from June 16 to October 14.4 There is no motorized access, so guests walk or ride a horse the 2.5 miles up the trail, a climb of about 1,300 feet.4 Drinking water and firewood are not provided.4

No source we read says the rental cabin is the old lookout or stands on its site.1,4,5 The lookout's elevation is 9,160 feet on firelookout.com.1 The rental cabin sits near the Gallatin Crest at about 8,900 feet, according to the Forest Service and Wild Montana.4,6 We found no source that says whether the old lookout site itself is open to visitors.1,2,3,4
