Story

Researched 8 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Ziegler Mountain is a flat-topped summit of about 20 acres in the Kootenai National Forest, roughly 18 miles northeast of Libby in Lincoln County, Montana.1,2,3,4 Some pages spell the name "Zeigler."3 The first structures, a log cabin and a three-legged platform tower, went up in 1915.2,3 A 1919 newspaper item described a tower on the summit that was reached by telephone.4

A second platform tower followed in 1928, about a quarter mile from the first.2,3 The sources disagree about the 30-foot pole L-4 tower that came next. The register dates it to 1928,1 while the association and firelookout.com put it in 1933.2,3 A catalogue record for a May 1959 photograph says the older lookout had been used since 1931.5 In 1959 a new tower went up beside it, a treated-timber R-6 flat-top with a catwalk.1,3,5 The register gives its cab as 14 by 14 feet.1 The height is also disputed: the association says 32 feet and firelookout.com says 30.2,3

Two July newspaper items, from 1956 and 1957, name married couples on the lookout. The 1957 item says the couple wanted to get used to life there before their duties began.4

The register says the lookout remains active,1 and firelookout.com says it is staffed during the summer.2 The association's 2026 projects page describes a condition assessment for the Libby Ranger District, carried out to see whether the lookout could be restaffed for fire detection.3 The assessors rated the tower, catwalk and cab exterior as sound. To photograph the interior, it removed two window shutters, and the photos showed the basic equipment needed for restaffing.3

None of these sources says whether the cab is open to visitors. The U.S. Forest Service administers the site,1 so check with the Kootenai National Forest before planning a visit.
