Story
Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
The North Carolina Forest Service built the Chambers Mountain Lookout in 1936, according to the National Historic Lookout Register.1 The register describes a 45-foot Aermotor tower with a 7-by-7-foot metal cab, in Haywood County.1,2 It gives the site an elevation of 2,466 feet (752 m).1
The tower went up during a busy stretch for North Carolina's fire towers. A description of the Forest Service's photograph collection says the Civilian Conservation Corps assisted in building 52 fire towers from 1933 to 1938, and that two-thirds of the state's forests had organized fire protection by 1936.3 The register credits the Forest Service with building this tower and does not mention the Corps, so this account does not assume the Corps was involved.1
An undated register description places it among the few still-active lookouts in western North Carolina.1 I found no staffing history, notable fire or named observer for the tower in the sources I could read.
The site was added to the National Historic Lookout Register on April 2, 2008.1 The register lists the NC Division of Forest Resources as administrator.1
Today the sources I could read do not say whether the tower is still staffed, whether it can be climbed, or whether visitors are welcome. Check with the Division of Forest Resources before planning a visit, and do not climb a tower that is closed or private.
