Story
Researched 8 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
Joanna Bald Lookout sits on Joanna Bald, a peak of about 4,716 feet in Graham County, North Carolina, within the Nantahala National Forest.1 One hiking guide places the lookout in the Snowbird Mountains of far western North Carolina.2
The Register's description says the tower was built in 1952, as a replacement for a wooden lookout house with a cupola from the early 1930s.1 The Register's date box says 1942, so the Register disagrees with its own description.1 Two hiking guides also give 1952.2,3 This story uses 1952.
The tower is 31 feet tall, with a 14-by-14-foot live-in cab and a catwalk.1,3
The U.S. Forest Service staffed the lookout first, and the North Carolina Forest Service staffed it until 2002.1 One hiking guide says the cab was staffed into the early 2000s.2
The Register says the tower is now maintained for emergency use.1 Vehicles cannot reach the top.3 A locked gate on Forest Service Road 423B sits about half a mile below the summit, and the hike starts there.2,3 The drive up FR 423 is steep and rough, and one guide advises a vehicle with clearance, ideally four-wheel drive.2
Usually the upper cab stays locked, and the view from the summit and the stairs is restricted.3 Please respect the locked cab and do not try to force entry.
