Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Walker Top Lookout stands on Burkemont Mountain in Burke County, on private land within South Mountains State Park.1,2 In 1951 the North Carolina Forest Service put up the Aermotor tower near Carthage.1 The 2016 photo caption ranks it first among western North Carolina fire towers, standing 100 feet high.2

The tower reached its current spot in 1990, when it was relocated from Moore County.1,2 A 2016 photo caption says the Forest Service manned it until the late 1990s.2 The sources we read give no later staffing details.

The Register registered the tower in 2008 after a nomination by Peter J. Barr.1 Kenneth Suttles and the state park appear as its cooperators.1 A 2016 Flickr caption says the photographer can see the tower from home.2

The Register places the tower on private land inside the state park.1 Please do not go up it or onto the tract without the owner's permission. Another site list gives a slightly different longitude for the tower, about 1.5 km east of the Register's point by our calculation, so the exact spot is not settled.3
