Story

Researched 8 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Craney Hill Lookout stands on a wooded hill in Henniker, New Hampshire, and the Town of Henniker owns it.1,2,3 A lookout has been on the hill since 1912, when the site was first developed for one.1,4

In 1932 the state's Forestry Commission put up a 41-foot International Derrick tower with a 7-by-7-foot metal cab.1,4 Afterward, a wooden cab measuring 10 by 10 feet was added on top.2 The Register says that cab raised the tower by ten feet, but a 2019 newspaper still describes a 41-foot tower, so the total height is unclear.1,2

Staff manned the tower on a regular basis until 1981.1 Sources give two dates for the change in control. A 2019 newspaper says the town received it in 1980, and a 2021 hiking blog says the state closed it in 1981 and Henniker took on its preservation.2,3 The sources I read name no particular fire the tower watched.

In 1997 the structure faced demolition to clear room for a cell tower.2 After word of a proposal to replace it with a commercial electronics tower spread, Henniker residents mobilized to save it.1 The Register listed it on February 17, 1997.1 The Forest Fire Lookout Association lists it as standing.5

A 2016 visit report in the Register says the Craney Hill Fire Tower Association keeps the tower in great condition.1 The Town of Henniker, the Henniker Historical Society and that association now manage it.1

The tower is kept locked against the public, and a 2021 hiking blog says it is opened one weekend each October.3 A 2019 newspaper gave the hours as 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on two October days, weather permitting.2 The walk in covers about half a mile of the Lester Lane service road, starting at Craney Hill Road.3 Check with the Town of Henniker for this year's open days, and do not try the tower on other days.3
