Story
Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
Whitcomb Mountain is in Coos County, New Hampshire, and the Forest Fire Lookout Association lists a tower on it as standing.1 A Forest Lookouts page for the mountain describes an Aermotor tower about 60 feet tall, seen in Google Earth imagery from February 2020.2 The same page carries the label Private in its header block, which we read as the site's ownership.2
We found no build date and no builder for the tower. We also found no record of who staffed it, what fires it watched, or whether it has been closed. Our web searches returned map and listing pages, not a history of the tower.
Nothing we read names an owner or sets access rules, so we cannot say whether the public may go up. Before visiting, find out who owns the land and ask permission. We do not recommend climbing this tower.
