Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Osborne Lookout stands on Archuleta Mesa, on the Jicarilla Reservation in Rio Arriba County, New Mexico, at 8,913 feet.1 The Forest Fire Lookout Association lists it as Osborn (Arachal).2 The register does not explain either name.

Construction began in late summer 1959, and the register calls Osborne the fourth lookout on the reservation.1 The Bureau of Indian Affairs designed it as a ground-level house with a cupola rather than a tower.1 It was completed and staffed in 1960.1 That year fires burned more than 1,000 acres on and near the reservation, and the register says the new lookout played an important role that year.1

Neither source says when, or whether, the lookout stopped being used. The register says the Bureau of Indian Affairs administers it, and the association lists it as standing.1,2

The lookout is on tribal land,1 and I found no public visiting rules. Do not go up to or into the lookout. Ask the Jicarilla Apache Nation or the BIA first.
