View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 3.1 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Red Top is in Sandoval County, on the Cuba Ranger District of the Santa Fe National Forest.1,2 The lookout there began as a 14-foot-square, wood-frame house of the L-4 type, built in 1933 according to a 1989 Forest Service survey.2

The survey says a trailer apparently replaced the house sometime in the 1960s, and it does not know when the trailer was placed.2 In 1989 the survey called that trailer the only trailer lookout in use on the Santa Fe National Forest, and it did not recommend the trailer for National Register eligibility.2

The Forest Fire Lookout Association's New Mexico list marks the site as gone.1 It codes the site as a ground site and does not mention the trailer that the 1989 survey describes there.1,2

No source I found describes what, if anything, remains at the site today, or whether visitors can reach it.
