Story
Researched 8 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
St. Peter's Dome lookout stands at 8,464 feet in Los Alamos County, New Mexico, on Santa Fe National Forest land.1 Its present cab is a Forest Service standard plan: a metal 14-by-14-foot flat-top with a catwalk, on a 10-foot cinder block base with a storage room.1 The register dates it to 1965, when it replaced an L-4 ground house that the register dates to 1932.1,2
The site was in use before the cab.3 A November 23, 1940 newspaper item, quoted by West Lookouts, reports that a Forest Service tractor crew turned back without reaching five rangers snowbound in the Jemez Mountains.3 The rangers phoned in to say they were not suffering hardship, and that their Dome Lookout Station was well stocked.3
On April 26, 1996, the Dome Fire broke out from an improperly extinguished campfire. The fire went on to burn 16,516 acres across Capulin Canyon and the Dome Wilderness.4 The register says the lookout is now used as a communications site, because of that fire, vandalism, and a 2001 re-burn by the Las Conchas Fire.1 A 2020 report to the New Mexico chapter of the Forest Fire Lookout Association says the lookout was unstaffed at that time.2
The register recorded the lookout on May 22, 2022.1 The Forest Fire Lookout Association lists it as a standing two-story cab.5 A 2016 Los Alamos Mountaineers hike notice gives the approach: 4.5 miles along FS Road 142 from its junction with FS Road 289 (Dome Road), on a 4WD road that nature is reclaiming.6 These sources give no current visitor rules for the cab, so check with the Santa Fe National Forest before you go.

Where sources disagree
We show disagreements between sources instead of quietly picking one. If you know which is right, please tell us.
Sources disagree on the year it was built.
- NHLR: 1965
- Forest Fire Lookout Association chapter reports: 1932
Sources give different build years. Often one counts the first lookout on the site and another the structure there now.
