Story

Researched 8 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Tohatchi Lookout stands at 8,827 feet in McKinley County, New Mexico, on the Navajo Indian Reservation.1

The National Historic Lookout Register says it was built in 1928 and is the oldest lookout on the reservation.1 Its tower is a 62-foot Aermotor with a 7-by-7-foot metal cab.1 The register notes three active lookouts on the New Mexico side of the reservation.1

The register names the Navajo Indian Reservation as administrator and the Bureau of Indian Affairs as a cooperator.1 The site was registered on July 20, 2002, with Dave Lorenz as nominator.1 A Forest Lookouts page places it in the Navajo Indian Agency area, and the Forest Fire Lookout Association list shows the tower as standing.2,3

Beyond the register entry, the public record on staffing and visits is thin. Anyone planning a visit should ask the Bureau of Indian Affairs first, since the register lists it as a cooperator.1
