Story

Researched 8 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

White's Peak, also written White Peak, is a lookout on Ortega Mesa in northeast New Mexico, just south of Philmont Scout Ranch.1,2 The New Mexico Forestry Division administers the site, which is located on state trust land.2 The National Historic Lookout Register describes a 70-foot Aermotor open steel tower with a 7-by-7-foot observation cab, plus a ground residence cabin on the site.2 The same entry says the construction date and the use status are unknown. None of the sources we read names a builder or a year of construction.2

On March 27, 1950, a fire swept over the lookout point.3 At the time, the lookout was the area's chief fire-spotting post.3 A Clovis News Journal account, quoted by the Western Lookouts site, says the fire destroyed the cabin, a tent, tools, the tower steps and the clothing of the lookout, Bob Blanchard.3 That account names the tower steps but does not mention the tower frame.3

The Register recorded the site on July 7, 2022, as US 1653, NM 52, with Brad Eells as nominator.2 The Forest Fire Lookout Association's list still shows a standing tower here.4

Access is the open question. In a September 2018 piece, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation said it had paid for a new 2½-mile road into the state trust land, and for a 35-year right-of-way lease that the State Lands Office granted to the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish.1 Licensed hunters can use the camping area where that road begins during hunting season.1 The sources do not say whether the cab itself is open to visitors, and we found no rental listing for it. Check with the Forestry Division and the State Lands Office before any trip, and do not climb the tower without permission.
