View from the cab
What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.
This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.
Downloads about 3.6 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story
Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
In August 1923 the Sullivan County Board of Supervisors agreed to spend $1,500 on a 60-foot fire tower for Chapin Hill. The offer was conditional: the state had to keep a man on duty during the fire period and assume all expense.1 The tower was a 60-foot Aermotor LS40 steel tower.2,3,4 It was completed early in the spring of 1924, in time for the whole fire season that year.1 A state report later credited county-subscribed funds with the cost, so the sources do not agree on who paid.1
The observer's living quarters got a new cabin in 1930.1
In 1941 a fire destroyed the observer's cabin and burned the first three landings and stairs of the tower.5,3 A 2020 chapter newsletter gives this in a trivia answer, and Wikipedia gives the same account.5,3
The tower stood through the 1970 season.2 Wikipedia says it closed at the end of the 1970 fire season, as aerial detection grew, and was removed later.3 A list of New York towers compiled by Bill Starr marks it as removed, with no date.4
No source I read describes what is left on the hill today, whether any footings remain, who owns the land, or whether the public can reach it.
