Story
Researched 8 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
The fire tower on Mount Nimham in Putnam County went up in 1940, built by the state and the Civilian Conservation Corps.1 Wikipedia credits CCC Camp P-135 of Peekskill with the work and gives the steel tower a height of 82 feet 6 inches, or 25.15 meters.2 The mountain is named for Chief Daniel Nimham, and its spelling was recently corrected from the older "Ninham."2
The tower was first staffed in 1941, and that year it recorded 73 fires and 266 visitors.2 Fire lookout work stopped after the 1988 season, and early in 1989 the state's Department of Environmental Conservation made the closure official.2 In 1994 vandals set fire to the observer's cabin.1
Around the mid-1990s, the Town of Kent rallied volunteers to bring the tower back. The restoration was completed in spring 2005 and dedicated on July 24 of that year.2 The National Historic Lookout Register had already listed the tower in October 1999.1
It has not been used for fire detection for many years; it now serves as a radio repeater site.1 According to the NHLR, the Town of Kent owns the tower, and volunteers help keep it up.1 Wikipedia says it is still open to the public.2
To reach it, the Town of Kent's trail guide describes a moderate, hour-long walk from the DEC lot on Gipsy Trail up to the upper parking area.3 From there, the hike to the tower takes about 20 to 25 minutes.3 The guide says the view from the top is worth the climb.3
