View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 3.5 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Conservation Commission erected a 60-foot Aermotor LS40 fire tower on Number Seven Hill in 1922, and it became operational in 1923.1 Starr's list gives 1923 as the opening year, and the chapter's January 2023 newsletter calls 1923 the tower's first year of operation.2,3 The hill sits about five miles southeast of Averill Park, in Rensselaer County.1,2

An observer's cabin went up on the hill in 1923, one of several new cabins built that year.3 The tower closed at the end of the 1970 season, as aerial detection came in.1,3 It was later removed.1,3

A New York chapter post on Facebook reports that little is left of the Seven Hill tower site near Stephentown.4 No source I read says who owns the hilltop now, or whether the public may go there.
