View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 3.4 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Spitzenberg Mountain sits in Blue Mountain Reservation, near Peekskill in Westchester County.1,2 In December 1929 the Westchester County Park Commission was building a stone shelter house with a cupola on the summit, for a fire observer.1 The main room was to be 16 feet square, and the cupola was to have windows facing the four points of the compass.1

Trucks and tractors could bring materials along a rough road to within a few hundred feet of the summit, but the final stretch needed a stone boat winched up on steel cable.1 The paper said an observer would be on duty in dry spells, when fire danger was high.1

Blue Mountain Reservation, a 1,538-acre park, was acquired in 1926.2 The Forest Fire Lookout Association's New York list records the summit site as stone ruins.3 No source I found says when the shelter fell into ruin or what the ruins look like now.

Today the reservation is open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to dusk, all year.2 Its trails reach the tops of Mt. Spitzenberg and Blue Mountain.2
