Story

Researched 8 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Sugar Hill Fire Tower stands in Schuyler County, New York, within the recreation area of Sugar Hill State Forest.1,2 Civilian Conservation Corps crews erected the 67-foot-6-inch steel tower in 1941.1,3 Wikipedia places the tower on Sproul Hill and says the name comes from the reforestation area the tower sits in.3

Volunteers staffed the tower first, and the state took over later.1 The register gives 1951 as the end of volunteer staffing and 1979 as the end of state staffing.1 A hiking guide says the tower was used until the mid-1980s, when aerial detection had grown cheaper and more effective.2 Wikipedia says lookout operations ended after the 1988 season.3 New York began retiring its fire towers from spotting duty during the 1980s.4

The tower was officially closed in early 1989.3 In 1990 the state shut down the final five towers still in use.4 A contributor's note on the NHLR page describes the 1941 observer's cabin beside the tower as in nearly mint condition and notes its original wrought iron door latch.1

The Sugar Hill Recreation Area, off Tower Hill Road, has parking, flush toilets, a picnic area and the trailhead for the Six Nations trail system.2 A hiking guide says people may climb to a point just below the cabin, but a state notice on its fire tower page says the tower is currently closed to the public.2,4
