View from the cab

What you see from the cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

Downloads about 3.9 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 8 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The fire tower now on Cathedral Rock began life on Tooley Pond Mountain, northwest of Cranberry Lake.1 The Conservation Commission built a wooden station there in 1913, and the R.W. Higbie Lumber Company paid for the materials for the tower, cabin and lines.1,2 The station was not staffed in its first season.2 A steel tower replaced the wooden one in 1919. Wikipedia gives it as a 47-foot Aermotor LS40, and that is the tower that now stands on Cathedral Rock.1,2,3

In April 1950 a Syracuse newspaper reported that Ralph Cole of DeKalb Junction would take over the fire tower.2 Lookout work ended at the close of the 1971 season.1 That year students from the New York State College of Environmental Science and Forestry at Wanakena took the tower down from the mountain.1

A February 1982 newspaper report, quoted by the Forest Lookouts site, describes Ranger School classes erecting an old fire tower on Cathedral Rock.4 Wikipedia dates the start of the rebuild to the 1980s, the cab's completion to 1999, and the final windows and restorations to 2000, with a dedication in July 2000.1 The National Historic Lookout Register instead says students and staff re-erected the tower in the late 1990s.3 The register and the 1982 newspaper credit students with the work, but the sources disagree on when it happened.

The register lists the tower as US 1698 and says it was registered on December 23, 2022.3 It stands on Cathedral Rock in the Ranger School Forest at Wanakena.3 The register says visitors can reach the summit by the Latham Trail from the Ranger School.3 Tooley Pond Mountain itself no longer has its tower.1,5 An Adirondack Explorer hike write-up says, "Well, the fire tower is still gone."5 I found no recent notice about the tower's condition, so check with the Ranger School before you go.
