View from the cab
What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.
This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.
Downloads about 3.7 MB of terrain data the first time.
Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story
Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
Whites Hill is a 1,427-foot peak in the northern Adirondacks, southeast of Parishville in St. Lawrence County.1 In 1950 the state Conservation Department put up an 80-foot Aermotor LS40 steel lookout tower on its summit.1,2 A list of the state's fire towers compiled by Bill Starr gives the same model and height, and says the tower opened that same year.2
The tower began lookout work in 1951, and that first season logged 3 fires and 588 visitors.1 Before 1970 the state ran it part-time, on a need-by-need basis, with fire wardens sent out on assignment from the district forest ranger.2
Sources disagree on when the lookout ended.1,2 The state list says the tower was decommissioned at the end of the 1970 season.2 Wikipedia says operations stopped after the 1971 season, because aircraft were doing more of the spotting, and that the tower was later taken down.1
Wikipedia says the observer's cabin was later moved to the state Department of Environmental Conservation's Trout Lake Shop, where Operations Unit personnel use it.1 The Forest Fire Lookout Association's New York list also says parts of Whites Hill went into two platform towers at Wilson Hill Wildlife Management Area.3 We found no second source for that reuse.
The association's list marks the Whites Hill tower as gone.3 No source we found describes what remains on the summit today, or whether the hill is open to visitors. The cabin is now at a state shop, not on the mountain.1
