View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 3.7 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Former Fire Lookout Sites Register says a 30-foot pole L-4 tower was built on Anthony Butte in 1937.1 Firelookout.com gives the same height and date.2 The butte sits in Union County, about 20 miles south-southwest of La Grande, within the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest.2

Two local papers from September 1933 describe a 14-by-14-foot lookout house being built on the butte.3 The Baker Democrat-Herald put the tower at 35 feet, and the Record-Courier at 30.3 The sources do not agree on the date, and none says whether the 1933 tower is the one the 1937 date describes.1,3,2

In July 1933 a Baker paper said Dean Bidwell would be running the station that summer.3 Firelookout.com names Neil Taylor for 1940 and Maurice Larive for 1942.2

An AWS cabin was added in 1942 and a cupola trailer was set up in 1975.1,2 Both the register and firelookout.com say the lookout was gone by 1977.1,2 Rex's page marks the site only as "Removed."3

The register includes a photograph captioned as the Anthony Butte site in 2018, credited to Rex Kamstra, but the caption does not say what it shows.1 No source we read describes what, if anything, is on the summit today, or how to reach it.1,3,2
