View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 3.9 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Former Fire Lookout Sites Register places Arbuckle Mountain in Morrow County, within the Umatilla National Forest.1 Firelookout.com places it roughly 20 miles southeast of Heppner.2 In August 1922 a Heppner paper described a new lookout station: a platform in a large fir tree, ninety feet up and held by a steel crow's nest frame.3 In October 1927 a Heppner paper reported that work on a new lookout tower was finished.3

The register says a 24-foot pole platform followed in 1930.1 Rex's page says a 24-foot pole platform was in use in the 1930s, and a January 1931 item said the tower had been upgraded and a cabin put up for the lookout.3

The later wooden tower took shape between 1946 and 1948.1,3 The register and firelookout.com give a 67-foot wooden L-4 tower built in 1946.1,2 A Heppner paper said in September 1946 that the foundation was nearly complete.3 A January 1948 Ukiah district report, however, describes a new 14-by-14-foot lookout station on an 83-foot tower, with the house to be finished that spring.3 The sources disagree on the height and on when the tower was finished.1,3,2

Firelookout.com lists Homer Landers in 1922, Frank Farnsworth in 1927, Kate Smith in 1945 and Calvin Webb in 1949, among others.2

The register and firelookout.com say the lookout was last manned in 1974 and taken down in 1976.1,2 Rex's page also gives 1976 for the removal, and records a repair in January 1956.3

No source we read describes what, if anything, remains on the mountain today, or whether the road up it is open to visitors.1,3,2
