View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 3.8 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Baber Butte lookout stood on Baber Mountain, seven miles east of Toledo in Lincoln County, Oregon.1,2 The register lists the Oregon Department of Forestry as its administrator.1

A 10-acre plot was bought for the lookout in 1939.3 CCC crews did the road work and built the tower in 1940.3 The 1940 annual report describes a 40-foot tower with a 14-by-14 cabin on top, built of wood on a concrete foundation.3 The register calls it a 40-foot pole L-4 tower and says an AWS cabin was added in 1942.1 The sources disagree about the cabin itself. A June 1942 inspection describes a 14-by-14 Aladdin cabin on the 40-foot tower, but the 1942 annual report says a ground cabin, 18 by 20 feet, was built that year.3

Edward Richter took the patrolman's job at the new site in July 1940.3 A July 1941 paper named Chester Sparks as the patrolman that year and said no fire had yet been reported there.3 A December 1941 paper, reporting local blackouts, said volunteers kept the lookout manned day and night.3 In 1942 a college couple, Mr. and Mrs. Keith Bannister, took over the post.3

Annual reports record repairs and painting from 1955 to 1960.3 The 1960 entry describes fixing the tower door and broken windows.3

The register says the lookout was removed in 1970.1 The firelookout.com page says it was destroyed that year.2 The Oregon lookouts page gives an earlier date: it says the lookout was dismantled in 1969, after several years of disuse, when wind damage and vandalism made repairs too costly.3 The sources do not agree on the year or the method.

No source we read describes what, if anything, remains of the lookout on the hill today, or whether the site is open to visitors.
