View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

A telephone line reached the top of Balm Mountain in 1915, and a forest crew pushed the final four miles through eight feet of snow.1 In September 1928 a packer set out over the Callapooia trail to drag logs up for a cabin at the lookout.1 Sources disagree on the cab itself. The Register and Firelookout.com both describe an L-5 cab from 1933.2,3 Oregon Lookouts instead lists an FC-2 (L-4) house around 1934, with question marks beside the entry.1

In 1941 the lookout was staffed for 75 days, and its reports went through the Oakridge Telephone Company to the Oakridge Ranger Station.1

Both the Register and Firelookout.com say the cab was gone by 1962. The Register says it was removed, while Firelookout.com says it was destroyed.2,3 A 1980 Forest Service survey description calls the house now abandoned, which does not fit neatly with a 1962 end date.1 The same description places a survey disk stamped 1935 about 16.5 feet south of the house's southeast corner.1

Mountain Plants of the Western Cascades describes remnants of the old lookout at the north end of the ridge, and notes that little of the trail is left.4 Its directions run along forest roads to a pulloff, then on foot up the ridge; the old lookout sits about a quarter mile from the road.4 No source we read says whether the survey disk is still in place.
