View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Baty Butte is a 5,052-foot summit in Clackamas County, Oregon.1 Oregon Hikers places it at the western fringe of the Mount Hood National Forest.2

The summit's first lookout was a tent equipped with a phone.1 The Former Fire Lookout Sites register says the Forest Service placed it there in 1914.1 Forest Lookouts and Oregon Hikers both date the first tent lookout to 1911, so the sources disagree on the start date.1,3,4,2 In the 1930s the tent gave way to a ground L-4 cab.1,3,2

Oregon Hikers says the lookout was among the first equipped with an Osborne fire finder, an alidade-type sighting device that W.B. Osborne of Portland invented.2

In September 1919 the Molalla Pioneer reported that two men had been in charge of the Baty Butte lookout while they were away at Bagby Hot Springs.4

The cab was gone around 1949.1,3 Oregon Hikers dates the lookout's decommissioning to before 1950.2

Oregon Hikers describes a brief scramble to the summit along the south ridge from the Baty Butte Trail, and says an ammo box holds the summit register.2 The same guide calls the southwest face precipitous and advises keeping back from its edge.2 None of the sources we read describes what, if anything, remains of the lookout on the summit today.
