View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 3.5 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Bear Point is in Marion County, Oregon, in the Mount Hood region.1 Forest Lookouts places it in the Willamette National Forest.2

In April 1931 the forest supervisor, C. C. Hall, said Bear Point was one of eleven emergency lookouts planned that year.2 It was to join the forest telephone system, giving it a link to the fire control office at Fish Lake.2 The lookout was built in 1934. The register says the U.S. Forest Service built its L-4 cab that year, while Forest Lookouts says the CCC constructed a 14-by-14-foot lookout house.1,2

In July 1934 a newspaper reported that Kenneth Wilson was stationed there, and called the lookout the highest in the Willamette National Forest, at 6,035 feet.2 The register gives the summit as 6,043 feet, so the two sources differ slightly on elevation.1,2 In 1941 the lookout was staffed for 70 days. Reports were relayed through the Detroit Ranger Station and the Santiam Co-op Telephone Company.2

Forest Lookouts says the structure was burned on October 11, 1968.2 The register says the cab was gone by 1968.1 The Former Fire Lookout Sites register listed the site on August 16, 2010, with Ray Kresek as nominator.1

The register lists the site as administered by the U.S. Forest Service.1 No source describes what, if anything, remains on the summit now, or whether the summit is open to visitors. Check with the Forest Service before going.
