View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 3.8 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Beaver Mountain sits in the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest in Union County, Oregon.1,2 The register gives its elevation as 6,080 feet, while firelookout.com gives 6,040 feet.1,3

A 30-foot pole platform went up on the site in 1920.1 Later, in 1936, a 30-foot pole tower with an L-5 cab was built there.1 Firelookout.com gives the 1936 tower a 7-by-7-foot cab.3

The register places the end of the lookout in the 1940s, and firelookout.com lists it as abandoned in that decade.1,3 Forest Lookouts also marks the site as removed.2

The site was registered on November 18, 2019, on the nomination of Tammy McLeod, and the register lists the U.S. Forest Service as administrator.1 The register does not describe what remains at the site today, and it says nothing about public access.1
