View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 3.6 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Big Hole Butte sits in Lake County, Oregon, on the Deschutes National Forest, about 19 miles southeast of LaPine.1,2

A 1970 Bend Bulletin account says a crew built a telephone line from the Summit stage station to the summit in the spring of 1931.3 In August 1932 the paper reported that work was about to start on a 20-foot tower with a standard lookout house on top.3 The register describes it as a 20-foot pole tower with an L-4 cab, built in 1932.1

In June 1932 Neil Winkle left for the Fort Rock district, where he was to be the forest fire lookout at Big Hole Butte. He had returned from there by October.3 In January 1936 Roderick Blacker was the lookout.3 One evening he sighted a plane's flare, drove down the highway to meet a couple whose plane had made a forced landing in an old burn, and brought both of them back to the lookout, where they stayed all night.3

The register says the tower was removed in 1958.1 Firelookout.com says it was destroyed that year instead.2

The register's only photo, dated 5/2/2001, shows a foundation block for one tower leg.1

No source we found describes the summit today beyond that photo, or says whether the butte is open to visitors or how to reach it.1
