View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 4.3 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Blodgett Peak rises to about 1,052 feet in the Siuslaw National Forest, in Lincoln County, Oregon.1

In January 1943 the Corvallis Gazette-Times reported that a lookout station was going up in the middle of the Blodgett area, and that planned roads and trails would aid fire control and shield the tract's plantations.2 In early February, papers said workers from Camp Albert Angell, a camp for conscientious objectors, were to build the tower. One report said it would be a log tower 20 feet tall.2

By October 1943 the Corvallis Gazette-Times reported that a 14-by-14 house had been put up on the peak, atop a creosoted tower 40 feet tall, and that a good road now let visitors reach the lookout by car.2 The Register and firelookout.com both describe a 40-foot pole tower with an L-4 cab.1,3 The February height plan appears to have been superseded.

In 1953 the lookout was moved to Cummins Lookout.1,3 The Register dates a photo of the tower on Blodgett Peak to 1943 through 1953.1

The sources use both "Cummins Lookout" and "Cummins Peak Lookout,"1,3 and they do not say which Cummins site received the tower. A Register entry for a Cummins Peak site in Lane County says a 41-foot timber tower topped by an L-4 cab went up in 1954 and was removed in 1975.4 That entry does not say whether it is the same tower.

The Forest Lookouts page marks the Blodgett Peak lookout as removed.2 No source we read describes what, if anything, is left on the summit today, or whether the site is open to visitors.
