View from the cab
What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.
This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Story
Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
The Blue Ridge lookout stood in Coos County, Oregon.1 Sources put it between 8 and 10 miles southeast of Coos Bay, depending on which one you read.2,3
The Coos fire patrol planned a glass-enclosed lookout on the ridge in 1931.3 The register dates the first tower to 1933, and the Oregon Lookouts page credits the Civilian Conservation Corps with building it.1,3 The register and firelookout.com say 45 feet, the Oregon page gives 55 feet, and a 1933 newspaper it quotes says each lookout was 60 feet high, so sources disagree about its height.1,2,3 A 1958 newspaper also says the tower it replaced had been erected in 1934, so the build year is not fully settled.3
The Coos fire patrol staffed the lookout during fire seasons in the 1930s and 1940s.3 John Queen, a Marshfield High School instructor, was stationed there during the summer of 1935 and again in 1937.3 Lloyd Jarvis was the first lookout assigned for the 1941 season.3
In 1942 an AWS cabin was built at the site.1 In 1958 the Blue Ridge and Beaver Hill lookouts were condemned and demolished after 23 and 24 years, and two new 50-foot towers were erected in the same locations.3 The register and firelookout.com say the tower was abandoned in 1966.1,2 A 1965 district report said Elk Mountain served as a replacement for Blue Ridge, Brewster Rock and Signal Tree.3 A 1974 report said the old tower had not been used for several years and was dismantled that year because of rot.3 The Forest Fire Lookout Association's Oregon list also marks the site as gone.4
A 1942 survey description places a bronze disk, set in a concrete marker, 6.6 meters west of the tower's center.3 No source we read says whether that marker still exists, what else remains at the site, or whether it is open to visitors today. The last access notice we found, from 1972, closed the road to the public during construction.3
