View from the cab
What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.
This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.
Downloads about 3.5 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story
Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
Buck Peak sits in the Mount Hood region of Hood River County, Oregon, at about 4,751 feet.1 In August 1933 a pack train carrying lumber for lookout house construction went off a narrow ledge between Lost Lake and Buck Mountain, and one horse had to be shot.2 A panorama of the "Buck Peak Lookout" was taken on November 9, 1933.1,2 The register says the Forest Service erected an L-4 cab on the site in 1934, while the 1933 items suggest that construction was already under way, so the two sources date the work to different years.1,2
Both the register and firelookout.com put its removal no later than 1950.1,3
None of the sources checked describes what remains at the site today. Firelookout.com places the site in the Mt. Hood National Forest.3 The Forest Fire Lookout Association's Oregon list gives the county as "Hood River/ Multnomah," which differs from the register's Hood River County.4
