Story

Researched 8 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Carpenter Mountain is in the Willamette National Forest, about seven miles north of McKenzie Bridge in Linn County.1 A government lookout was on the summit by 1914, when it found a fire ten miles northeast of Belknap Springs.2 Accounts of the early buildings disagree. The NHLR calls the first one an open-sided fire shelter from 1917, and the Forest Lookouts page lists a cupola-style house for that year.3,2 Firelookout describes a rag camp and shelter, and says lightning destroyed the site in 1921.1

The present cab is an L-4 design, which Cherylhill describes as a ground cabin.4 The NHLR says the CCC built it in 1935, while the Forest Service dates it to 1934.3,5

Early reports show the lookout spotting fires. In June 1918 it saw a fire about a quarter-mile wide near the southern boundary of Linn County, and in 1920 lightning struck the telephone wire to the station.2 A 1939 newspaper item named Alvin Blankenship as the fireman for that season and said it was most important to have a lookout stationed there.2 In 1986 lightning hit the cabin again. A ranger report recorded 14 windows blown out and the roof lifted off its frame, and the cabin was left under repair.2

Firelookout says the cabin saw little use after the 1960s and fell into disrepair.1 It was restored in the 1990s, and the Forest Service lists a 1995 renovation.1,5 The NHLR adds that the cabin is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.3

Today the Forest Service says the cabin is manned in fire season and cannot be rented by the public.5 The 2026 directory lists it as staffed.6 The Forest Service's directions end by turning left on Forest Road 350, driving about five miles north to the Carpenter Mountain Trailhead, and climbing Trail 3302.5 The Forest Service rates it a one-mile, moderate trail.5 Cherylhill's 2014 visit describes parking at a trailhead about a mile away and hiking up.4 For current conditions, the Forest Service asks visitors to contact the McKenzie River Ranger Station, so call before you go.5

Where sources disagree

We show disagreements between sources instead of quietly picking one. If you know which is right, please tell us.

  • Sources disagree on the year it was built.

    • NHLR: 1935
    • firelookout.com -- Rex Kamstra's Forest Fire Lookout Page: 1917
    • Every Lookout in Oregon (Cheryl Hill): 1935

Sources give different build years. Often one counts the first lookout on the site and another the structure there now.
