View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.0 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Cemetery Ridge lookout stood in Wallowa County, within the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest, about 33 miles northeast of Enterprise.1,2

The Forest Fire Lookout Association says an L-4 cab was built here in 1940.1 Firelookout.com gives the same year and lists the cab as gone.2

Named watchers appear in the record from 1942 to 1951, including Fred Beaudoin in 1942 and Robert Spencer in 1951.2

The cab's later history is disputed. The Forest Fire Lookout Association suggests the cab could have gone to Buckhorn Mountain in 1947.1 The Buckhorn Mountain record, however, says its L-4 cab was moved there from Fairchild Point in 1952.3 A weebly page quotes a 1954 history of the Wallowa National Forest that says the Cemetery lookout blew over in 1952.4 The sources do not agree on what became of the cab.1,4,3

No source read describes what, if anything, remains on Cemetery Ridge today.2 The Forest Service's Buckhorn Tower Viewpoint is open for day use only.5 None of the sources read links that viewpoint to the Cemetery Ridge cab.1,3
